There are so many things to love about summer in Canada, with an abundance of quality music festivals definitely making the list. Music fests bring crowds and communities together to enjoy favourite artists, discover new ones, and to soak in a range of amazing experiences unique to each festival and host city.

Recently, in part one of 5 Festival Facts, we featured four international jazz festivals that TD is pleased to support. Here, we highlight music festivals taking place this month in Montreal, Halifax and Calgary respectively. Each programs a fantastic array of music – including jazz, blues, soul, funk, folk, rock, hip-hop and more between them. All have their own distinctive character, devoted fan base and loyal volunteers who help make events happen.

We asked festival representatives to share some of their story with you through fun stats and facts. Read on to discover more about three music fests that millions of Canadians love to attend. Summer music season is in full swing; enjoy the sun and the sounds!

TD Festival International de Jazz de Montréal

“The Festival International de Jazz de Montréal welcomes more than 2 million visitors each year.”

“Offering 1000 concerts and activities - two-thirds of which are free - the Festival hosts some 3,000 musicians and public entertainers.”

“The Festival creates more than 1000 paid summer jobs. Since its inception, it has given over 20,000 students their first work experience.”

“It is also the first festival in the world to have been officially recognized as carbon neutral.”

“Placed end-to-end, all of the sausages sold in a single edition of the Festival would measure 50 kilometres; this is 627 times as high as the Mount Royal!”

TD Halifax Jazz Festival

“At this year's 30th anniversary edition, we will exceed one million attendees over the Festival's history.”

“Volunteer hours for last year's festival were approximately 6000, with nearly 500 volunteers contributing annually.”

“[During the Festival] it’s like the whole city is a stage. With our main stage on the waterfront, it is magic when the sun sets on a beautiful day and music fills the air.”

“The 2015 festival generated a total of $13.4MM of economic activity in the province, of which $9.1MM was in Halifax.”

Calgary Folk Music Festival

“Our Festival is almost entirely contained to an island in the heart of the city. There’s often 12 to 13 thousand people on the island each day of the festival.”

“CFMF is very genre diverse, with influences of Indie, World and Funk, as well as Folk Roots.”

“Since 1980 we’ve hired more than 2,500 acts and paid more than $14 million to local, national and international artists. 17% of our annual musical programming is comprised of Alberta artists.”

“Our Environmental Program is award winning! More than 85% of the waste at the Folk Fest is diverted from landfills, and we are on our way to being a zero-waste event. The City of Calgary is using us as a pilot case to investigate how to provide waste and recycling services to festivals and events.”

“1800-plus volunteers contribute year-round to the Festival, in every capacity you can imagine! We allow volunteers to design their shirts into funky designs, and they take it very seriously.”
