An Evening with Rokia Traoré
Victoria, BC – University of Victoria Farquhar Auditorium
8pm November 5, 2016

Rokia Traoré is an award-winning Malian singer, songwriter and guitarist whose career spans almost two decades. As a member of Mali’s nobility, Traoré was initially discouraged from pursuing a career in music, but her father’s status as a diplomat did influence her unique musical style. As a child, Traoré travelled across continents and was exposed to musical genres including classical, jazz, pop, and traditional Indian composition. From the 1998 release of her debut album, Mouneïssa, Traoré has developed a style that beautifully blends Western pop and rock influences with West African rhythms and instrumentation. Her sixth album, Né So, released earlier this year, reflects an artist who continues to push at boundaries. Traoré performs here in a co-presentation of the Victoria Jazz Society and the University of Victoria Farquhar Auditorium.
