Arkells ON: Advice for Student Bands

Published on Monday March 2nd 2015

Anyone who’s ever balanced post-secondary education with work or a time-consuming passion project knows that it can be a serious juggling act. The men of Hamilton, Ontario rock band Arkells have lived it.

The group met while studying, in 2006. They bounced between studio sessions and student deadlines while recording early releases. Those seriously long days paid off as the guys have since released three ace albums, won two JUNO Awards, and toured much of the globe. They’re also double nominees for this year’s JUNOS, and will perform as part of the Awards broadcast, from their hometown, on Sunday March 15.

Arkells’ vocalist and guitarist Max Kerman was one of three judges for TD and CBC Music’s 2014 Rock Your Campus contest. Arkells also performed at a related concert for McGill students.

TD Music caught up with Kerman backstage before that show. Check the video above to see what advice he has for students wanting to make the grade in both school and music.
